The bandwidth of the connection between each Remote
Stations and the Central Processing Systems will be ~10 Gbit/s,
of which ~ 2.5 Gbit/s will be occupied by the sustained datarate
resulting from the sensors.
The wide area data transport system for LOFAR will
be based on digital optical fibre communication. The method by which
data will be encoded and transmitted is a function of the data rate
to be supported, the distance over which data are to be transported,
and the nature of the fibre infrastructure (existing commercial
fiber, or proprietary fiber laid by the LOFAR project).
The WAN will be implemented using 10 Gigabit
Ethernet (10 GbE) technology. This is the obvious choice for distances
up to ~40 km with a single transmitter/receiver pair, but will also
be used for longer distances unless cheap and reliable alternatives
are available (e.g. by reuse of existing infrastructure).
