LOFAR is being funded by the Dutch government in the BSIK programme for interdisciplinary research for improvements of the knowledge infrastructure. See: BSIK web site
Additional funding is being provided by the Province of Drenthe and by the EZ/KOMPAS programme of the “Samenwerkingsverband Noord-Nederland”, which is partly financed by the European Union European Regional Development Fund.
The partners in the LOFAR consortium contribute to the LOFAR development from their own research budgets. Various other parties contribute to the LOFAR R&D program.
LOFAR started as a new and innovative effort to force a breakthrough in sensitivity for astronomical observations at radio-frequencies below 250 MHz.
